π Meet Nyla!!! π
Nyla is a 10-month-old, female Pit mix whoβs been with Reneeβs Rescues since March! This sweet girl has been overlooked and itβs due time for her happy ending! She is fully grown at 45 lbs, spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines. Sheβs house trained, crate trained, and loves to give kisses! Please see what her foster has to say about her below, and submit an application for adoption if you feel Nyla could be your new best friend!!!
Dog πΆ friendly?: Yes – gets along with dogs of all sizes! She is very energetic and plays hard, but seems to adapt to different dog play styles/sizes. She may be a bit energetic for an older dog and can be slightly pushy trying to convince a dog to play, but does back off eventually. It takes her longer to recognize the ‘no’ as it seems she wants to try really hard to submit and be the pup’s friend.
Cat π friendly?: Yes. Our cat is dog savvy and enjoys the chase and playing. She has been around a small kitten (up to 9 weeks) and did well. She stayed with someone with multiple cats and did well there too.
Kid friendly?: Nyla has not been around many kids, but has been nice with the ones she has met. She can be shy around new people and bows for pets. I would be concerned about smaller kids as she is strong and always excited to greet new people!
Youngest age of children youβd recommend: We suggest dog savvy kids over 10. Although she is very sweet, she gets bursts of excitement and small children may get knocked over. We are working on jumping, but she still does it at peak excitement times – when we get home and while playing with her favorite ball. She also can give sloppy kisses and teeth are felt. There is no biting, but can be mouthy. When playing ball, she needs a ‘leave it’ after dropping the ball or may try and grab the ball with her mouth the same time your hand grabs it.
House π broken?: She is house broken and paws/jumps at/rings the bells on the door when she wants to go out. She is on a schedule of potty breaks and hasn’t had any accidents in the house. She doesn’t go potty much on walks and would have to get used to potty breaks on walks instead of a yard if there is no fenced area.
Crate trained?: Nyla goes in her crate whenever we say ‘crate up’ or ‘crate time’. She does expect a treat however, and we give her one each time she goes in the crate. Usually a small milk bone, but sometimes kongs with peanut butter. She will sometimes give a rumble if she wants to come out, but does really well in there overall. She is in the crate during the day and sometimes at night, depending on her ability to wind down each evening. She uses the crates for a break anytime her energy gets to the overstimulated/overtired point.
Leash trained?: Leash training needs some work on pulling. She loves going for walks and gets excited. She is a bit odd when putting the harness on and will shy away from it – almost like she is scared of it. We have given a treat each time we put it on, but she still cowers. It’s a padded one, so don’t think comfort is the issue. We avoid using just a collar due to the pulling. The pulling happens the most when there is something she wants to see – like another dog or human. She has more confidence when with another pup, but seems to do better (less pulling) when alone. It seems to be due to wanting to be near the other dog or the first one to the distraction.
Travel well in the π?: Nyla loves going on car rides and rides well. She does like to put her head out the window so she wears a seatbelt on every ride or she will put her paws on the door and have half her body out the window. She likes the front seat, so the belt keeps her in the rear as well and from trying to give random kisses to the driver and causing a distraction.
Energy level (on a scale of 1-10, 1 being total couch π₯, 10 the energizer π°): She has bouts of very high excitement and energy and I would place her around a 8. When she gets very excited, she can jump from a crouching position and get air. I have been bent down and her head connected with my face, so she has to be watched and continually working on the excitement jumping. It has improved, but not all there. She plays well with dogs and will match their play style, which can get rough. She can go for long bouts of high energy play before she is ready to stop and does zoomies in the house and outside.
Fenced yard required?: highly recommended. Nyla does better having a free area to use the bathroom instead of going on a leash. She also does well working out her energy in a yard either running around or playing with her ball. She does not run or have escape tendencies, but I have noticed she does better when a fenced yard or designated free run space is available.
Ideal family dynamic/living situation: Nyla would love to have another playful pup in the home. She would do ok as an only dog, but would need extra attention directed towards her to keep her stimulated. She does well in the crate so someone who works out of the home is ok. She hasn’t been destructive to property that isn’t hers. She is very sweet and likes to cuddle and be touching humans as often as she can. She prefers to sleep right next to you when she naps and at night.
Favorite toys π§Έ πΎ and activities: Nyla loves to play with her large nerf ball. We throw it for her and she attempts her acrobatics in the air to catch it. She doesn’t have the best coordination with her catches, but she puts all she has into it. She also loves playing tug-of-war and will wave a toy at another dog in attempts to get them to tug. Even when she wins, she brings it right back to them to continue playing. She enjoys chewing on bones of all kinds and may gnaw at a soft toy unless they are the ‘ballistic’ kind, as it’s harder for her to gnaw.
She does best with structure and someone who is willing to be firm in their training as she still distracts very easily and can think it’s a game. Her energy comes in bouts and someone experienced with dogs with energy is best, as it could become overwhelming if not addressed (stimulated properly). She is worth it as her loyalty is second to none!!
